What natural food outperforms the strongest "doctor recommended" OTC cough syrups?
So next time you have bronchitis and your cough id keeping you up, besides warm drinks, soup, and TLC, raw unfiltered honey is not only cost-effective for your symptoms, it's also helpful in making feel better. This is the conclusion on a recent peer reviewed study in the British Medical Journal.
As I never recommended OTC cough syrups because the way they work is to interfere with the nervous system response to irritants and inflammation. Warm drinks, ginger juice tea, warm lemonade with honey and fresh squeezed lemon/lime will soothe the inflammation and assist your body and immune system in feeling better sooner. ... RESOURCING FOR COVID
May 8, 2020
COVID 19 is the illness people have when they are infected by the SARS-Corona-Virus-2 that was fist described in Wuhan province, China in December 2019. It is a flu like illness with headache, fever, dry cough, loss of smell, and severe respiratory distress, or sudden cardiac death. Few of those who contract the virus develop the illness, actually less than 6%. For most people ( more than 80%), the illness is asymptomatic, which means they do not have any symptoms, illness, and feel just fine (children and the younger population), or have what we typically know as a flu like illness ( about 10%) which is self limiting, lasting a couple of weeks and resolving with rest and supportive care. This virus is unusually contagious and transmitted easily through air droplets which are contagious for up to several days. One prominent feature of this illness is a loss of sense of smell, which is more so than with the common cold or allergies. For some people, mainly the old , immunocompromised, and those with a pre-existing condition, it can result into an acute severe respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), heart attack due to inflammation of the heart, and even death from respiratory or heart failure. Elderly men are most vulnerable to its most severe manifestations, in fact twice as many men die of complications as women do.
What is the difference between the COVID 19 virus and the FLU virus? Influenza A and B which occur seasonally and have a predictable course and epidemiology, cause the common flu. Influenza C causes a very mild illness, and Influenza D does not affect humans and mainly affects cattle. A human virus is adapted to the human body and humans have developed some form of immunity towards them by being exposed to the various flu(s) over the years. SARS-CO-VI 2 is a mammalian virus that originated in bats and was transmitted through a pangolin, a scaly snouted mammal. It is a virus that is similar to viruses that are used for genetic engineering. Such non human viruses are often used in the lab to develop genetic material for medical and other treatments, specifically because they are not human viruses and do no normally infect humans. However, when the virus mutates, as most organisms do, it is possible for it to infect a human if the mutation causes it to be adaptable to the human cell. This may be one of the ways this virus became infectious to humans.
Why is there a pandemic?
This corona virus pandemic occurs because there are several conditions: a) It is a new infectious agent and there is no prior immunity to it. b) The virus spreads easily between people before they are aware they are carrying the virus. c) The virus causes no illness in most people. d) the virus causes an illness in some people. e) The infection spreads across continents.
Why do some people die while others are unaffected?
The Respiratory distress Syndrome which may develop in some people is a severe inflammatory response to the viral infection itself. It is not due to a complication of the disease such as developing pneumonia as a potential complication of the flu. People who smoke or with preexisting medical conditions such as heart disease, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), diabetes are at higher risk of developing complications. Since humans have not commonly been infected by Corona viruses ( remember it is originally a bat virus), the immune system is inexperienced dealing with it and therefore, its response can vary depending on the host ( the person contracting the virus). The response can be likened to what people do when they are faced with a challenging problem, a perceived threat, or a perceived innocuous nuisance If the body thinks it’s a threat and deploys all its armamentarium to fight it, it develops ARDS ( Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). This is like someone trying to kill a bunch of flies with a machine gun. The damage done is much worse that that done by the flies alone. When the virus is perceived as a simple nuisance, then the immune system mounts a proper immune response which does not destroy the host ( itself or the lungs) in the process. It’s like using a fly swatter. No serious damage is done to the host.
The other more recent finding is that this virus may affect the heart in more than one way. It can affect the heart muscle and cause a myocarditis which may appear like a heart attack with failure of the heart muscle and death. It can also cause a heart attack by causing blockage of the arteries due to previously asymptomatic minor blockage of the arteries. This is the same mechanism that occurs with common heart attacks, and therefore cause death.
How do you protect people from the Corona virus?
To protect from getting the corona virus or any other virus such as the flu, one needs to avoid contact with the virus. This can be accomplished by a) physical distancing and staying away from people who are infected, and therefore can transmit the virus. b) protecting oneself from unintentional exposure by washing hands, keeping hands away from one’s face, using antiviral and antiseptic solutions to destroy any virus on one’s hands, face, skin, or clothes. c) living a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy, exercising, and being happy avoiding stress and responding mindfully to stressful situations. There are several effective virucidal solutions on the market which use isopropyl alcohol, soap, and other disinfectants. However, one of my favorites is a home made solution of 8 ounces 95% ethanol*( obtained from liquor stores), one ounce aloe vera gel or juice, 5 drops clove essential oil, 6 drops tea tree essential oil, and/or 5 drops peppermint essential oil. The other virucidal solution I use in addition to washing my hands with soap, is bio-active colloidal silver solution. Just spray over your hands and wipe your hands. It can also be used on the face. Washing one’s hands and faces frequently with soap and then using one of the above solutions is very effective. Using colloidal silver on hands and face, and spraying it into nostrils before going out and after washing hands and face when returning from an errand, Other virucidal essential oils used are oregano essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, rosemary essential oils and a few more. Many companies make these solutions which are less toxic than most of the commercially available ones. Removing outer jackets outside the home and not bringing shoes into the home are also protective.
Is there a treatment for the disease?
As of this day ( May 2020) there is no accepted medical treatment that is approved for this disease. The treatment is supportive to help the patient breathe and allow oxygenation. There are experimental studies testing drugs such as chloroquine which is an anti-malarial, and some antiviral agents. A Chinese study reports administering antibodies from COVID 19 survivors to severely ill patients resulted in significant improvement. A German study revealed that survivors of the COVID 19 illness have antibodies that makes them immune to getting the illness again for an unknown period of time. A study in the town of Gangelt, Germany, testing by virologist Dr. Hendrik Streeck, and colleagues revealed that 14% of the residents had antibodies against the virus and that 2% were actively infected Testing for antibodies against the COVID 19 virus in residents of San Miguel County, a small town in Colorado is shedding light on incidence, prevalence, and transmission of the virus in that town. National testing and more information is needed to understand this virus transmission, infection, and effects on wider populations.
Why do we need isolation and physical distancing if most people who contract the virus don’t get sick?
While most people will be fine when they contract the virus and develop antibodies and become immune, a small percentage ( 1-5%) are at risk of serious illness requiring intensive care. If one could control who contracts the virus and who doesn’t, it might be helpful to have more people develop immunity which would decrease the chance of transmission of the virus. That is basically what happened in the past when families would have chickenpox parties for their young children so they would contract it and get it over with during childhood, when it was less severe to protect them from getting it later in life when it could be severe, or even life threatening. However, the system is not prepared to selectively transmit the virus to groups of people without endangering some who may be at risk of developing severe complications of the disease. Social distancing and isolation will limit the spread of the disease and slow down its transmission, and therefore the number of people infected at the same time, the number of severely ill people, as well as the number of people immune to the virus. Limiting the number of severely ill people will be less likely to overwhelm resources of the current health care system.
How do I boost my immunity and protect myself against the illness?
Boosting your immunity is a preventive measure that is a good practice at all times. a) Good nutrition, eating organic vegetables, whole foods, avoiding processed foods, sugar, alcohol, refined carbohydrates, meats, and toxins as in foods with pesticides such as the dirty dozen (apples, pears, grapes, celery, spinach, lettuce, berries, pears, cherries, strawberries, potatoes, peaches and nectarines). Using nontoxic cleaning agents and avoiding harsh detergents, artificially scented products, artificial flavorings, foods laden with heavy metals such as Tuna, swordfish, and other large cold water fish, farmed fish treated with antibiotics. b) regular exercise moderately such as walking, hiking, bicycling, c) managing stress such as mindfulness, awareness, meditation, using heart math technology, d) participating in activities the bring joy and gratitude; laughing, dancing, volunteering, playing, e) social support such as engaging socially with family, friends, and/or community, volunteering, and very importantly e) understanding and trusting that your body has the capacity to protect itself from viruses and does so all the time. If it did not, you would not be alive. Fear and panic will overwhelm the immune system and cause a severe inflammatory reaction as occurs in anaphylaxis, allergies, and in the lungs of those critically ill with COVID 19.
Are there integrative or holistic ways to deal with the virus?
Since COVID 19 is a new illness, there is no documented information. There are some recommendations in the integrative medicine literature which state in addition to the recommendations in answer to question 9 above, taking 2 grams of liposomal vitamin C per day, taking adequate amounts of vitamin D, vitamin A, and other essential vitamins, will help prevent the COVID 19 illness if exposed to the virus. Many holistic physicians and functional medicine physicians will treat patients wit 20-30 grams of intravenous vitamin C in addition to other supplements during the acute illness. The other recommendations are in dealing with the whole person and all the systems rather than trying to address the virus, some practitioners have reported successfully helping people recover from the illness, when they were in the ICU with the COVID 19 illness. There is need for scientific research to evaluate all forms of treatments, conventional and unconventional, holistic and integrative .
This information is presented for education only. It does not to replace medical advice. Information will likely change as new research emerges.
